The kohaku tategoi tossai purchased in March 07, was harvested by breeder Hoshikin in Oct 07. The kohaku had grown from 26cm to 49cm. It was in immaculate condition and the breeder suggested it would be suitable for future growth in mud ponds for another year.
Growing costs in the Niigata area
The growing costs paid to breeders are dependant on the time of year agreed with the breeder, if your nishigoi (koi) is tossai (1 year) and it is agreed that the koi will be grown in the breeders mud ponds, then this will be from March/April through to Oct/Nov, the cost for this is agreed between all the breeders at 30,000 yen.
If after the harvest in Oct/Nov you agree with the breeder that the koi would benefit from a further year (your koi is now referred to as nissai - 2 year old) then the cost should be 50,000 yen, as this figure involves the breeder holding your koi in their koi houses through to the following March/April before re-entering the mud ponds.
