Hoshikin Tategoi Kohaku - harvested Oct 07
|
The kohaku tategoi tossai purchased in March 07, was harvested by breeder Hoshikin in Oct 07. The kohaku had grown from 26cm to 49cm. It was in immaculate condition and the breeder suggested it would be suitable for future growth in mud ponds for another year.
Growing costs in the Niigata area
The growing costs paid to breeders are dependant on the time of year agreed with the breeder, if your nishigoi (koi) is tossai (1 year) and it is agreed that the koi will be grown in the breeders mud ponds, then this will be from March/April through to Oct/Nov, the cost for this is agreed between all the breeders at 30,000 yen.
If after the harvest in Oct/Nov you agree with the breeder that the koi would benifit from a further year (your koi is now referred to as nissai - 2 year old) thent he cost should be 50,000 yen, as this figure involves the breeder holding your koi in their koi houses through to the following March/April before re-entering the mud ponds.

Tategoi - Article by Peter Waddington Feb 08
|
The Nishikigoi breeders place their tategoi in their mud ponds during late May to early June, the actual date depends on rough equalisation of the water temperatures between their indoor Winter spending ponds and that of the outdoor mud ponds. The breeders have stocks of tosai (Koi born last Spring) and these are now around 4” to 6” long. They also have stocks of nissai (Koi born two Springs previous) these are now around 12” to 15” long. And they also have stocks of sansai (Koi born three Springs previous) these are now around 18” to 22” long plus other stocks from four years old and over. All these stocks have been kept in indoor heated glass houses since the harvest of their mud ponds made during the previous October and fed daily. With the exception of their parent stocks all these Koi will be placed in mud ponds during late May to grow until October after the Spring selection is carried out. Throughout the six month period in the mud ponds no culling will be made on these stocks but the Koi are fed twice each day, once in the early morning and once during mid-afternoon generally with pelletised Koi foods of the breeder’s choice.
